Whether you work at a desk all day or find yourself constantly checking your phone, this episode offers valuable insights into maintaining healthy posture and preventing pain in the digital age.

Hey everyone, this is Doctor Hartung from Family Chiropractic Center here in Robinson Township, Pennsylvania. Thanks for tuning in today.

You know what I see more than almost anything else in my practice these days? Neck pain, shoulder tension, and headaches… all tied to one common culprit. Our screens. Whether it’s your phone, your laptop, or your tablet, we’re spending more time looking down and hunched forward than ever before in human history. And our bodies? Well, they’re paying the price.

So today I want to talk about why posture matters more than ever, and what you can do about it starting right now.

Here’s the thing. Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it’s balanced properly on top of your spine. But for every inch your head moves forward, you’re adding roughly ten extra pounds of stress on your neck and upper back. So if you’re looking down at your phone with your head tilted forward just two or three inches, your neck is suddenly supporting twenty-five, maybe thirty pounds. That’s like carrying a bowling ball around on your shoulders all day long.

Now multiply that by hours every single day. Your muscles get tired. They start to fatigue and tighten up. Then your joints get compressed. Over time, this forward head posture creates a chain reaction through your entire spine. You start rounding your shoulders. Your mid-back curves too much. Your lower back has to compensate. And suddenly you’ve got pain and tension in places you didn’t even realize were connected.

Let me break this down a little more. When your posture is off, it’s not just about looking slouched. It actually affects how well you breathe, how much energy you have, even your mood and confidence. Poor posture compresses your chest cavity, which means your lungs can’t expand fully. You’re taking shallower breaths without even realizing it. That makes you feel more tired and stressed.

Plus, there’s growing research showing that forward head posture can contribute to chronic tension headaches and even jaw problems. Everything in your body is connected. When one part is out of alignment, other parts have to work harder to compensate.

So what can you do about it? Let me give you three simple changes you can start today.

First, raise your screens. Whether it’s your computer monitor or your phone, bring it up closer to eye level. Your eyes should be able to look straight ahead or just slightly down, not way down at your lap. I know it feels a little awkward at first, but your neck will thank you.

Second, set a timer. Every thirty minutes, take a quick break. Roll your shoulders back. Gently tuck your chin and lengthen the back of your neck. Take three deep breaths. Just twenty seconds of resetting your posture can make a huge difference over the course of a day.

Third, strengthen your upper back. The muscles between your shoulder blades are often weak and overstretched in people with forward posture. Simple exercises like wall angels or resistance band rows can help wake those muscles back up and pull your shoulders into a better position.

Now, here’s what I want you to understand. If you’re already dealing with neck pain, shoulder tightness, or frequent headaches, these tips can help, but they’re not a substitute for getting evaluated. Sometimes the joints in your neck and upper back get stuck or restricted from months or years of poor posture. That’s where chiropractic care comes in. We can gently restore motion to those areas, reduce tension, and get you moving the way you’re supposed to.

At Family Chiropractic Center, we see people every single day who thought they just had to live with neck pain or tension headaches. And the truth is, most of the time, you don’t. With the right combination of adjustments, posture correction, and some simple exercises, people feel dramatically better.

So if you’ve been putting up with pain or tightness, don’t wait until it gets worse. Give us a call. We’re right here in Robinson Township, and we’d love to help you feel better and move better.
